Ancient Rome and Chiles

The ancient Romans used several different spices and ingredients in their cooking, but most historians agree that some form of Chile peppers were used in their dishes. This ancient use of spices is believed to have spread around the world and helped create the cuisines that we enjoy today.

The most common form of Chiles used by the Romans were the small, spicy peppers known as Capsicum frutescens. These Chiles were used not only for their flavor, but also for their healing properties. The Capsicum was believed to help with digestion, and some Romans even believed that it could reduce the pain associated with joint inflammation.

Other types of Chile peppers used in ancient Rome include the Jalapeno pepper and the Poblano pepper. The Jalapeno pepper was used to add a unique flavor to dishes and featured prominently in stews and sauces. The Poblano pepper was also used as a flavor enhancer, but its mildness made it an ideal accompaniment to crisp vegetables or salads.

In addition to these two varieties, the Romans also used the habanero Chile for its sharper flavor. The habanero is widely believed to be the hottest pepper in the world, and its intense flavor was used to add a unique kick to dishes.
