The ancient Romans were known for their love of all things canine. Many of the dog breeds we know and love today were actually developed in ancient Rome. Among the most popular breeds were the Roman Shepherds, also known as the Italian Greyhounds. These dogs were used for hunting and guarding sheep. Other popular breeds included the Mastiff, the Bolognese, and the Neapolitan Mastiff. These dogs were used for hunting, guarding, and as loyal companions. There is no one definitive answer to this question since, much like with modern breeds, the dogs of ancient Rome would have varied depending on the region and specific purpose for which they were bred. However, some historical records do mention certain dogs that were popular during that time period.
