Ancient Rome was located in Italy and was influential in the development of Western civilisation. The Roman Republic was established in 509 BC, and grew steadily in power. By the 1st century BC, the Roman Empire had come into being, and would go on to become one of the largest and most powerful empires in history.<\/p>\n

Rome was founded in 753 BC by the twin brothers Romulus and Remus. According to legend, they were suckled and cared for by a giant she-wolf at the site until they were grown. Romulus killed Remus and is said to have then founded Rome. The first historical records of Rome date from this time.<\/p>\n

Rome rose to power as a republic in the 6th century BC. The republic was a form of government in which power rested in the hands of elected officials. The Roman Republic dominated the Mediterranean world and expanded its territory through conquest. In 27 BC, the Republic was replaced by the Roman Empire when Augustus Caesar became the first Roman Emperor.<\/p>\n
