There are many ancient Roman texts that are still available for us to read today. These texts provide insight into the lives of the people who lived in Rome during that time. Some of the most famous ancient Roman texts include the plays of Plautus and Terence, the poetry of Horace and Catullus, and the histories of Livy and Tacitus.

Ancient Rome used a form of writing called Latin.

What did Roman poets write on?

The Romans wrote on papyrus scrolls and parchment. Important documents were written on these materials in order to preserve them. The Romans used a metal pin dipped in ink in order to write. For more temporary writing, they used wax tablets or thin pieces of wood.

The ancient Egyptians had a very different way of writing than we do today. They were not allowed to write on what we would consider to be paper, as it was very expensive. Boys first practised on a wax tablet. Only when they had shown that they could write well, were they allowed to write on paper – which was made on the Ancient Egyptian method of papyrus reeds.
