It’s hard to argue with Barlag’s assessment of Commodus, who was, by all accounts, a terrible ruler. He was arrogant, wasteful, and violent, and he drove the Roman Empire into economic and military decline. But was he really the worst emperor in Roman history? <\/p>\n

That’s a hard question to answer, because, as Barlag points out, there were a lot of bad Roman emperors. And it’s also difficult to compare them, because they ruled at different times and under different circumstances. <\/p>\n

Still, if we’re looking at the worst emperors in terms of the damage they did to the Roman Empire, then Commodus definitely deserves to be near the top of the list. He squandered the Empire’s resources, alienated its<\/p>\n
