Slavery played an important role in Ancient Rome. Slaves were acquired through conquest, trade, or purchase and they could be owned by anyone from the emperor to a common citizen. A slave’s life was generally harsh and slaves were often brutally treated. They were however, allowed to marry and have families.While the slave system in Ancient Rome was not as effective as the one in Ancient Greece, it still managed to provide Rome with the majority of its labor force.<\/p>\n

The slave system in ancient Rome worked by having slave-owners purchase slaves, who were then put to work in a variety of ways. The slaves would usually work in the fields, but could also be assigned to other tasks such as manufacturing or domestic work. Sometimes slaves were also used as soldiers or bodyguards.<\/p>\n

Slaves were an integral part of the Roman Empire, working in a variety of fields and contributing to the economy in a significant way. Though they were not always treated well, slaves were generally able to assimilate into Roman society and become part of the population.<\/p>\n

The Roman state was built on the foundation of forced labor, with as many as 1 in 3 of the population in Italy or 1 in 5 across the empire being slaves. Slaves served in households, agriculture, mines, the military, workshops, construction and many services. This contributed greatly to the prosperity of the Roman state.<\/p>\n
