The Roman Republic was founded in 509 BC by Romulus and Remus, two of the sons of Mars, the god of war. After killing Remus, Romulus became the first ruler of Rome. The Roman Empire was founded in 27 BC by Augustus Caesar, the first emperor. Augustus was the grandnephew of Julius Caesar, who had been assassinated in 44 BC. Julius Caesar was a very successful general who had conquered much of Europe and Egypt. He was so popular with the people of Rome that they made him dictator for life.<\/p>\n
