Most people think of ancient Rome and immediately think of men like Julius Caesar and Marco Polo. What is often left out of the history books, however, is the significant role that women played in ancient Rome. Women in ancient Rome were responsible for the home and children while the men were out fighting wars or working. While this may seem like a minor role, it was actually very important to the Roman society. Women also played a role in the political arena. They were able to vote and hold office. In fact, some of the most powerful people in Rome were women.<\/p>\n

The role of women in ancient Rome was largely determined by their fathers or husbands, but they were also expected to bear children, manage the household, and uphold the family’s reputation. Many wealthy women had slaves to help with these tasks, but most women were expected to perform them all themselves. Although they could not vote or hold public office, they could own property and engage in business.
