In ancient Rome, as in most ancient societies, the primary role of women was in the home. Women were expected to be wives and mothers, and their primary purpose was to maintain the household and care for the children. The age of lawful consent to marriage was 12 for girls and 14 for boys during the Roman period. Most Roman women married in their late teens to early twenties. Under Roman law, enslaved people had no personal rights and were regarded as the property of their masters. They could be bought, sold, and mistreated at will and were unable to own property, enter into a contract, or legally marry. This resulted in them being treated more like livestock than human beings, and many were subjected to horrendous conditions and treatment.<\/p>\n

Pteruges were either made of leather or multi-layered fabric (linen), and were worn around the waist of Roman and Greek cuirasses. They served to protect the hips and thighs, and were usually made in a way that allowed them to be easily removed and replaced.<\/p>\n
