Ancient Rome was founded in 753 BCE and officially became a republic in 509 BCE. After lasting until around the end of the Republic (27 BCE – 14 CE), it had a crisis with the unification of most of the rest of Italy by Gaius Julius Caesar’s first military and political campaign. This opened the door for his grandnephew Octavian to first become consul, and then eventually Emperor Augustus, the first Roman Emperor. The Roman Empire officially began in 27 BCE. Augustus ruled for over 40 years until his death in 14 CE. His reign saw many great accomplishments such as the Pax Romana, or the Roman Peace. This 200 year period saw very little military activity by the Romans and was considered a time of great prosperity. Following Augustus’ death, Rome passed through a tumultuous period with a string of often ineffective emperors. The most notable of these is probably Nero, who is remembered for his persecution of Christians and playing music while Rome burned during the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE.<\/p>\n
