In 533 AD, homosexuality became entirely illegal in Rome. Emperor Justinian was known to castrate those found guilty of homosexuality. This law remained in place for centuries, and was only overturned in the late 20th century.<\/p>\n

Hadrian was one of the most famous Roman emperors and is known for his public display of affection for his male lover, Antinous. Hadrian may have been gay in the modern sense of only being attracted to other men, rather than being bisexual which was relatively common in the Roman world.
