The ancient Romans were a fun-loving people and enjoyed a wide variety of activities for fun and recreation. Some of their favorites included chariot and horse racing, betting on sports, theatre and music performances, and of course, the famous Roman baths. They also liked to play games, both indoor and outdoor, and many of these games were very similar to ones we still enjoy today. Whatever the activity, the ancient Romans knew how to have a good time and enjoy life to the fullest!<\/p>\n

The Romans were a very fun-loving people and their idea of fun was very different from ours. They loved to watch and participate in amphitheatre games, chariot races, executions, animal hunts, gladiator battles, swimming, hunting and wrestling. They also enjoyed gambling, drinking and feasting. Roman parties were often very wild and rowdy affairs.<\/p>\n

Rome was a popular leisure destination in the ancient world. Some of the most popular activities among the wealthy were ball games, board games, dice games, going to the baths, throwing dinner parties and listening to music. It is clear that children in Ancient Rome had a range of different toys and games to enjoy. While some of these toys and games would be familiar to children today, others would be quite different. A typical day for a Roman would start off with a light breakfast and then head off to work. Work would end in the early afternoon, at which point many Romans would take a quick trip to the baths to bathe and socialize. Around 3pm, they would have dinner, which was as much of a social event as a meal.<\/p>\n

The age of lawful consent to a marriage in Rome was 12 for girls and 14 for boys. However, most Roman women married in their late teens to early twenties. Noble women tended to marry younger than those of the lower classes, and an aristocratic girl was expected to be a virgin until her first marriage.<\/p>\n

Tali, Terni lapilli, Duodecim Scripta, and Ludus Latrunculorum were all popular games in ancient Rome. They were similar to poker, tic-tac-toe, backgammon, and chess respectively. Nine men’s morris may also have been a popular game in ancient Rome.<\/p>\n

Chariot racing was the king of ancient Roman sports and one of the most popular Roman pastimes. The races happened in designated spaces called circus, two of which are still well visible in Rome. Circus Maximus could seat over 150,000 people and was used for horse and chariot races. Although it is now in ruins, you can still get a sense of its massive size. The other well-preserved circus is the Circus of Flaminius, which was smaller but also used for horse and chariot races.<\/p>\n

One of the most famous charioteers was Ben-Hur, who was featured in a novel by Lew Wallace and later a movie. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that chariot racing was a dangerous sport! Chariots would race around the circus at breakneck speeds, sometimes crashing into each other or overturned. Crowds loved the excitement and would often place bets on their favorite drivers.<\/p>\n

Although it may seem like a primitive sport to us now, chariot racing was a hugely popular form of entertainment in the Roman Empire. If you’re ever in Rome, be sure to check out the ruins of the Circus Maximus and imagine the chariots racing around the track.<\/p>\n

The ancient Romans were known to live in the moment and make the most of their time. This is why they would often spend their nights studying, meditating, or doing other things. This kind of sleep was natural for them because their bodies had no other factors to adapt to, except for the sun’s natural rhythm.
