The ancient Romans lived in a time before electricity, running water, and other modern conveniences. They depended on manual labor,animal power, and human muscle to sustain their society. The role of women was primarily in the home where they managed the household and took care of the children.<\/p>\n

The ancient Romans lived in a city called Rome. The city was founded by a man named Romulus. The ancient Romans were famous for their art, literature, and monuments.<\/p>\n

What was Roman daily life like? <\/h2>\n

A typical day for a Roman would start with a light breakfast and then off to work. Work would end in the early afternoon when many Romans would take a quick trip to the baths to bathe and socialize. At around 3pm they would have dinner which was as much of a social event as a meal.<\/p>\n

The poor in ancient Rome lived in very different conditions than the rich. The poor lived in the dirtiest, noisiest, and most crowded parts of the city. Their houses were poorly constructed and lacked basic amenities like heat, water, and kitchens. Life was very difficult for the poor in ancient Rome.<\/p>\n

Thanks to modern medicine and healthy living, we can expect to live even longer in the future.<\/p>\n

Most people in the Roman Empire were farmers. The most popular crops were olives, grapes for wine, honey, and cereal crops. Livestock such as beef and pork were common as well. Wealthy people owned the farms while the poor worked the land to harvest the crops and raise the livestock.<\/p>\n

What time did Romans sleep? <\/h2>\n

These sleep patterns are typical of those who lived in agrarian societies and did not have access to artificial light. The result of these sleep patterns is that nearly no one suffered from insomnia.<\/p>\n

The ancient Romans had a very different daily schedule than we do today. They woke up before dawn and finished work by noon. Then they would spend the afternoons pursuing leisurely activities like swimming and exercising. At sundown, they would get together for elaborate dinner parties that often went on until late in the evening. It’s interesting to think about how our own daily schedules might change if we followed the Roman model.<\/p>\n

The state provided games for fun and entertainment in ancient Rome, with two broad categories of ludi, meaning games, including theatrical performances, dances, and chariot races and munera, or spectacles, such as gladiator combats, wild animal shows, and other unusual exhibitions.<\/p>\n

What food did Romans eat <\/h3>\n

The Romans ate a lot of cereals and legumes, usually with sides of vegetables, cheese, or meat. They also ate a lot of sauces made out of fermented fish, vinegar, honey, and various herbs and spices. While they had some refrigeration, much of their diet depended on which foods were locally and seasonally available.<\/p>\n

Even though the average height was shorter than today’s Romans, around 5’5″, the average height was still taller than most of the population! This is due to the fact that the average height of a Roman was around 5’2″!
