It is thought that the language acquired this name due to the fact that the Roman Empire was largely based in the area we now know as Italy. This is where the Latin language is thought to have originated. The language then spread to other parts of the empire, such as France, Spain and Portugal, as the Romans conquered these areas.<\/p>\n
