Ancient Romans most likely had dark skin. Although there is no record of what the average skin color was, we know that Romans came from all over the world. Some of the most famous Romans, like Julius Caesar, were from Northern Africa. Caesar’s father was from Africa, and his mother was from Europe. So, it is safe to say that ancient Romans had a wide range of skin colors.<\/p>\n

The ancient Romans generally had darker complexions than the average modern European. This is due to the darker skin tones of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern populations from which they were largely descended. On average, the ancient Romans were probably somewhere between the lightest and darkest skinned people in the world today.<\/p>\n

The early Romans were made up of mostly Latin-speaking Italic people, known as the Latins. The Latins were a people with a strong Mediterranean character, similar to other Italic peoples in the area such as the Falisci.<\/p>\n

Women in ancient Greece and Rome were traditionally expected to stay inside and out of the sun, so they were usually very pale; whereas men were expected to go outside and work in the sun, so they were usually deeply tanned.<\/p>\n
