The ancient Egyptians were a very practical people. They regularly applied simple mathematics to solve practical problems. They also needed elementary arithmetic for surveying and for managing trade and taxes, but they were satisfied with rules-of-thumb that called for little in the way of understanding of the great body of theoretical Greek scholarship.<\/p>\n

The Roman numeral system was used for trade and they did not need to represent zero with a special symbol. They used a counting board for computations and their numerals were used only for writing down the results. This does not mean they did not understand nothingness. They had a word to mean nothing but no symbol.<\/p>\n
